Last month I bought a 40oz Klean Kanteen bottle and a 33oz Sigg bottle. In the end I prefer the Klean Kanteen. Both bottles are very light and look good. The Sigg is lighter, but not so much to really matter. Sigg wins easily in the looks department with different artwork to choose from and the bottle I have has a nice textured powder coat finish compared to the KK basic look and smooth surface. Sigg uses an epoxy to protect your water from the aluminum and tells you not to use the bottle for long term storage. Could be a bit worrisome not knowing what's in the epoxy and the possibility of aluminum contamination. I have not noticed a metallic taste from either bottle drinking straight unfiltered tap water. I prefer the stainless steel of the KK just because it's probably on the safer side. The bottles are both lightweight and made of thin metal. I haven't dented either but I have been very careful with them. Both feel like they would dent quite easily. I have not scratched either bottle and the paint on both looks like new after daily use from work to the gym. The KK bottle has the cap threading formed into the neck of the bottle while the Sigg uses a metal ring insert in the top of the bottle to thread the cap onto. Some people have complained that the Sigg's threaded insert is sharp, but I have not had this problem. The KK is more comfortable to drink from though. Also the wide mouth of the bottle makes it easy to put ice cubes in, which you can't do with the Sigg unless you have very small ice cubes. I have the loop cap on both bottles. The Sigg I really have to twist the cap on tight so it doesn't leak. The KK cap seals quite easily and has never leaked. The KK also uses a thicker thread size and is easier to screw the cap onto because of this. Some people are complaining about sweating. On a hot day with the bottles filled with ice cubes both will sweat, but plastic bottles will also. If I was going to spend that much money on a water bottle again, I would go with Klean Kanteen without a second thought. The only advantage of the Siggs is the exterior design. Update Dec 09: Over a year of use now and I have stopped using the Sigg due to their older bottles do in fact have BPA. Something they said it didn't have, so I won't buy another bottle from them again since it appears they were lying before. They will replace the older bottles, but you have to pay shipping. I have 2 Klean Kanteens and both have held up well. Some minor scratches and dents, but still look quite good.

Capacity: 40 ounces (1182 ml) Weight: 11 ounces Size: 10.625 x 3.5 inches (HxW, without cap) Opening diameter: 1.75 inches Frequently Asked Questions Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel? Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory. Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen? No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame. Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer? We do not recommend it and it will void the one-year warranty against manufacturer defects. Can I put my Kanteen on a stove? In a pinch, the Kanteen can be placed on fire or a stove. Beware not to melt the plastic lid or burn yourself. What is stainless steel? Stainless steel is an iron-containing alloy made from some of the basic elements found on earth: iron ore, chromium, silicon, nickel, carbon, nitrogen, and manganese. Properties of the final alloy are tailored by varying amounts of these elements. There are more than 57 stainless steels recognized as standard alloys on the market. Klean Kanteens are constructed from high quality sanitary grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content. Stainless steel has excellent resistance to stain or rust due to its chromium content making it a material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewery industries. Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert and sanitary.

Sigg Lifestyle Loop Top Water Bottle (1.0-Liters) Review

I received two metal bottles from I ordered from Amazon. A Sigg and a Kleen Kanteen (KK). The Sigg is 1 liter and made out of aluminum. The diameter of the bottle (3.15") is slightly too big for my car's cup holder, but fits my fanny pack pockets. The outside has some cool purple paint (comes in different colors/designs). There's a coating on the inside to protect the water from the aluminum; this coating is proprietary, so they won't tell you what it is. It does say not to use the bottle for long term storage, which makes me nervous, as does the aluminum. The KK is 27 Oz and made out of stainless steel. The diameter is too small for the car/fanny pack (rattles around), but fits nicely into a bike bottle cage. The 27 Oz is less than I prefer, but is probably OK for most purposes. Both seem like high quality items, which they should be for $20 each. Both have loop top screw on caps (KK has other options too) with gasket seals. KK's top is made of stainless steel on the side that touches the water, whereas the Sigg has a plastic top (nylon?). The top on the Sigg has a fine thread, which can cross thread more easily. The size of the opening on the KK is larger, which I like. Both have a smooth edge that's easy to drink from. Both pass the turn upside down test (no leaks). I rinsed both out with hot water several times, then put distilled water into each from my Waterwise distiller. The KK does impart a slight metallic taste, whereas I can't detect any added taste from the Sigg. I can also smell the metal from the KK. I don't know of any health problems from stainless steel, and in fact my distiller is made from stainless steel, so I'm not sure what to think about the added taste. It may be more of a smell than a taste from the KK, since when I pour water that has been in the KK overnight into a glass, there is very little taste difference. If KK made a 1 liter bottle with the standard diameter (about 3 inches, like plastic bottles), deciding which to use would be a no brainer for me. With the different trade off's, I'm not sure which I'll end up using, but probably the KK; the aluminum and coating just seem like they have too many potential health problems over the long term. KK does make a larger 40 oz bottle, but the diameter is too big for me at 3.5 inches.

Today, the SIGG bottle has acquired cult status. What happened is a success story that started in Biel, Switzerland in 1908. Küng, Sigg & Cie. manufactured leisure goods, kitchenware, and electrical appliances. The company relocated to Frauenfeld in 1916, where it helped pioneer the legendary tradition of Swiss quality. Since 1998, SIGG has concentrated on its core business: drinking bottles that deliver ultimate customer benefit. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Can Sigg bottles be used for boiling water? A: No. Strong heat can damage the outer coating. Q: Can dents in the bottle damage the Sigg bottle's inner coating? A: No, the Sigg inner coating is highly elastic. Dents cannot crack or chip the internal lining and the Sigg bottle remains perfectly usable. Q: Can I use my Sigg bottle for carbonated drinks? A: Yes, all Sigg bottle tops provide a 100 percent seal and will not leak. It's recommended that you fill the bottle no further than 1/2-inch below the lip. And before taking a drink, relieve the pressure inside the bottle by gently rotating the entire top. Q: Are Sigg bottles dishwasher safe? A: Yes, but because of the narrow mouth of the bottle, hand washing is recommended. Q: Can a Sigg bottle be placed in the freezer A: No, as this may cause the bottle to crack. However, the bottle can be chilled in the refrigerator.
